Exemption—Historic residential real property dedicated for preservation
Historic Residential Dedication Tax Benefit List
Owners of homes listed on the Hawaiʻi Register of Historic Places may qualify for a real property tax exemption by dedicating all or part of their residential property for historic preservation, which requires maintaining the home in at least average condition and providing the public with either continuous visual access from a public way or, if that is not possible, scheduled on‑site viewing opportunities. The owner of an approved historic home must install and maintain a city‑approved historic plaque on the property. Once an application is approved, the dedication lasts a minimum of 10 years and renews automatically. Failure to meet the program requirements will result in cancellation and a rollback tax with penalties.
